i had done a compression test on it again with a different guage, and it showed between 150-170 psi. so the guage i used must have been bad, or the valve in it, or wasnt the right type. i redid timing, and tuned the carb, and it runs like a bat out of hell, oh also put a 180*t stat in it, instead of the 160. aaron
Hello everyone! You all are great, answering my questions about current dilemmas and future plans. I just got a proper rotary compression tester and so I wanted to share my results. For context, I daily drive a 1991 S5 NA RX-7 with almost 130k miles on the original powertrain. I just ran a compression test and maxed out at 90 psi on almost all the cylinder. I had 2 that were only about 75. I don't believe this is high enough. It sounds like combustion doesn't happen until a minimum of 90. I did add some oil to each cylinder and tried again, had luck on a few, but still nothing higher than 90.

1st thing to ask is how many miles has the engine done as if its about the 60K mark its far more reasonable to expect the 90 psi figure than the 115 psi ( sorry to say) I'd say to do another compression test with a 'normal' gauge as while these cannot give 3 readings the final figure should still be the same as the one recorded on the posh 3 .Engine was remanded by Mazda roughly 30k km ago.
